Biography: Artist Statement: My objective is to synthesize the two major currents that comprise Contemporary Art: traditional sources which reflect a continuity that extends back through the centuries, as well as, modern derivations that are rooted in Dada. My work simultaneously continues in the modernist tradition of the "readymade aided", discarded and reclaimed objects, randomness, "combines", and pop image, coalescing these influences with traditional paintings emphasis on color, form, light, space, line, composition, and texture. These two sources are combined to develop and construct abstract paintings. I have been a professional fine artist for over 35 years. For most of this time I have been investigating "abstractions" that result from observations that are photographed and then translated into paintings. My current paintings are the result of photographing images from pop culture media and making abstract paintings from these. Past painting series have been developed from sources such as places where multiple light sources cast shadows of varying forms and values , Photos made by placing a glass of stale beer in front of assorted subjects, and especially by the discovery of subjects in piles of randomly discarded refuse found throughout Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Pittsburgh. Sources such as railroad cars of crushed painted 55 gallon drums, a burnt down lumber yard, and the weathered walls in deserted factories have also been explored. I work in oils, acrylics, and watercolors. I have studied modern and classical painting theory and techniques, and I apply these both experimentally and traditionally. Of course, my imagination and technical facility play a key role in this process . All paintings are made with the finest materials. They are made entirely by hand, without the aide of any mechanical means or projection techniques. MATERIALS: The oils are on 17 Oz. Linen using Rembrandt, Sennelier, and Blockx paints. The Acrylics on paper are done on 555 Lb. Rough Arches paper.
